40% off everything...while supplies last!!

40% off!?! I know. I have some explaining to do.

This is not an easy post to write. You see, lately I've been wondering if we should keep our doors open. This business was started 4 years ago when my first son was born. It was a way for me to stay home with my family...yet remain creative and make a little income on the side. Lately, however, I am feeling pulled in too many directions. I have been feeling more overwhelmed by this business rather than fulfilled by it.

The final straw came when Congress passed the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act. This law goes into affect February 10th and requires that all products made for children (ages 12 and under) undergo rigorous testing to prove that they don't contain lead or pthalates. While this sounds like a good idea (who doesn't want to get those lead tainted toys off the market??), the reality is that thousands of crafters and artisans will go out of business -- Mairzey Dotes included. I simply cannot afford to pay thousands of dollars to prove that my products, which have never contained toxins, STILL do not contain toxins. Click here to read more about this crazy law.

While I am not saying for sure that we are closing our doors...I feel strongly that God is telling me to take a new direction. I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, please take advantage of my indecisiveness and get 40% off your order by entering the code "thanks" at checkout. And please spread the word about the new legislation...and the big sale!!

Hi, my name is Shelley and I live in Franklin, IN. :-) Just south of you! I saw your line of products at the Imagination Station. I think they are fantastic! I do have a question. Since you primarily work with fabric, why would this law affect you? Is there lead in fabric?
a little confused...

Hey Shelly,
I know...this legislation is absolutely ridiculous! Of course there is no lead in fabric. There is no lead or toxins in our products and there never has been!! However, the law applies to ALL products made for children ages 0-12 years. Originally, the law was made to keep the lead tainted imported toys off the market. However, the way the law is written, it will affect all makers of children's toys, clothes, etc. There is going to be a huge impact on all producers of handmade children's products. If you think this law is as ridiculous as many of us do, please contact your congressman. There are many other things you can do...just click on the "save handmade" button on the top of our blog to find out.

Yes, but I read this part of the law and would think it would give you an "out"...

Beginning February 10, 2009, children’s products cannot be sold if they contain more than 600 parts per million (ppm) total lead. Certain children’s products manufactured on or after February 10, 2009 cannot be sold if they contain more than 0.1% of certain specific phthalates or if they fail to meet new mandatory standards for toys.

Since yours contains no lead at ALL, it doesn't make sense according to this why you would have to go under testing. Just curious. :-)

Shelly unfortunately the way the law reads is it doesn't matter whether you 'know' the product has no lead. Anything made (the finished product) for children 12 and under has to be tested by a 3rd party for lead. Yep it's a stupid very vague law. You will find this interesting.
