Well...I guess it's official. We won't be re-opening our doors. I've taken a few months to make this decision and it finally feels right. I've recently returned to work as a veterinarian and it is right where I need to be! I know there will be days when I miss all the fun of Mairzey Dotes...but it's time to move on.

Some of you have probably heard the fabulous news that there has been a one year stay put on the latest CPSIA legislation. This basically means that makers of children's products will not have to test their items until 2010. While this does not completely lift the burden off of businesses like Mairzey Dotes, it is certainly a major step in the right direction!

So if this is such great news, why do you only have one week to order from Mairzey Dotes?? Well, all of the CPSIA stuff has really made me reflect upon my business, my family, and my life. I need a serious change. You see, the reason I started this business was so I could be home with my kids. But I have realized that while I am home with my kids...I am working way too much! (Which means less time to play, less trips to the park, and less time to nurture my family and myself. So what is the purpose of being home???)

40% off!?! I know. I have some explaining to do.

This is not an easy post to write. You see, lately I've been wondering if we should keep our doors open. This business was started 4 years ago when my first son was born. It was a way for me to stay home with my family...yet remain creative and make a little income on the side. Lately,however, I am feeling pulled in too many directions. I have been feeling more overwhelmed by this business rather than fulfilled by it.

The final straw came when Congress passed the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act. This law goes into affect February 10th and requires that all products made for children (ages 12 and under) undergo rigorous testing to prove that they don't contain lead or pthalates. While this sounds like a good idea (who doesn't want to get those lead tainted toys off the market??), the reality is that thousands of crafters and artisans will go out of business -- Mairzey Dotes included. I simply cannot afford to pay thousands of dollars to prove that my products, which have never contained toxins, STILL do not contain toxins. Click here to read more about this crazy law.

While I am not saying for sure that we are closing our doors...I feel strongly that God is telling me to take a new direction. I'll keep you posted.

Don't get me wrong, I do love winter...but when it's sunny. Or snowy. I do not like the typical Midwest winter days like we've been having lately. If you live in the Midwest, then you know what I'm talking about. It seems like it's cloudy and gloomy from early December until...I don't know...May?

Guilty!

Yes. I'm guilty...of getting up very early this morning to get to an appointment and then coming home and putting my pj's back on! You see, our giant beast is getting neutered today. I had to have him to the clinic by 7:15 a.m. -- which most of you are probably thinking "big deal!" But hey, I am no morning person. I don't live with morning people. I don't raise morning people. Even my animals aren't morning "people." So, to have to be somewhere by 7:15 a.m. is a major feat.

(Now, those of you who know that I am a veterinarian probably don't care that I had to get up early this morning. You are probably just wondering why I didn't neuter our dog myself. Well, I am more of a medicine girl...and I do NOT do surgery on my own animals. It's just too weird.)

Anyway, it is such a crummy morning -- 30 degrees, dark, and raining. Who doesn't want to spend a day (or just an extra hour) like today in their jammies?

And good luck today, puppy! I'll be worrying about you until I get you safely back home.

This is my favorite time of year! I absolutely love November -- the air gets chilly, the leaves change colors, I sip hot apple cider and gather with family...and then holiday shopping! Holiday shopping? Now, that is certainly not one of my favorite things to do. I definitely lose my patience when I have to deal with long lines, no parking, crabby people, and trying to find all the perfect gifts! So, this year, I am making a deal with myself. I will get all of my shopping done before December, and then I can enjoy the actual holidays.

Will it ever really happen? I don't know. It's sure a big task. And I know it's a big task for all of us! That's why I'm going to try to help motivate you to get a jump start on your holiday shopping. Check it out:

I was finishing up some quick emails today before the boys and I jetted off to run errands. I told my 4 year old to go potty...and then said we had to find their socks before we headed downstairs to get their shoes.

Apparently, my 2 year old was following the instructions "find your socks." He was so proud when he brought me one sock. And when I went into his room to get the other one -- this is what I found:I guess I need to tell him that his socks are in the bottom drawer.

Conversations with a 4 year old

Here is a picture of my 4-year-old playing in the leaves last weekend. I think he is probably your typical 4-year-old...you know, looks all sweet and innocent yet says the craziest things.

Today before I put the boys down for their naps, we were going through the normal routine of picking up toys. Jackson (above) was all wound up and was not quite helping as much as his 2-year-old brother. He had several warnings about not helping...but then it happened. I turned into my mother and started yelling to him (as he was not even in the same room now). "Jackson! Get in here right now and help us put away your toys. One....TWO......" By now I had walked into his room because I knew the whole counting thing wasn't working.

He was sitting on his bed smiling and said, "Mommy, you forgot to say THREE!!"

"You don't want me to get to three," I said.

"I don't? Why? What happens when you count to three??" he said (very well knowing what happens when I get to three).

"You go to time out," I reminded him.

"Oh. Well, what happens when you count to four?" he asked.

"Jackson, don't worry about it." At this point I knew it was hopeless.

"Ok. So I shouldn't worry what happens when you count to four...or ten...or eighty??" he asked. "Just three?"

"Right."

How do kids come up with this stuff??

Wow. I remember back in the 80's when I was in LOVE with Huey Lewis. My parents took us to his concert...which was the first concert I ever attended. They even bought me a concert t-shirt! Man, did I think I was hot stuff! Anyway, after that concert, all I wanted to do (aside from singing back up for him) was be in the Huey Lewis fan club.

Several years later, I find myself still loving Huey Lewis. I never did get to sing backup and never did join the fan club. (Gasp!) Fourth of July Pictures

When I started this blog, it was because I wanted you to know what was going on in my secret little life. Well, it seems I haven't been doing a very good job of that! So, I'm going to share some pictures from our Fourth of July weekend and introduce you to the folks that keep me extremely busy when I'm not working.

We spent the entire weekend with my family and enjoyed lounging around my granny's lake house. (Not that you really ever get to "lounge" with a 1.5 year old and an almost 4 year old...) Nonetheless, we enjoyed your typical American cookout, fireworks, and even a little boat parade.

The boys thought it was a great "vacation" and really took it all in. Here are Jackson and Sawyer keeping their eyes on the boat parade, which was probably the longest they sat still all weekend.(Sorry I didn't edit the pics...I know they could be a little lighter...I'm just thrilled I uploaded them from my camera to my computer!)

Of course, on most of our outings the whole family (minus the cat) go, too. I might as well show off our other two boys....Albert and Chopper.

Notice the glare from the glass. That is because our dear Albert (above) sometimes likes to eat people. So, he gets to enjoy the lake from inside. Chopper, our 5 month old puppy (below) got to enjoy some time outside because he is a good boy. Can you tell I like furry, hairy dogs?

While I'm posting, I might as well show off my hunka' hunka' burning love, Brad. He was enjoying some pool time with Sawyer (who was still watching boats.)

We had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed being away for a little while. But as always, now it's back to the grindstone. Oh, and where are the pictures of me, you ask? Don't hold your breath. It was a lake house, people. That means a bathing suit, crazy hair, and no makeup. No one wants to see that. :)

Twitter Me This

So, are any of you Twittering? Do you know what Twitter is? Well, I'm Twittering...and I don't really know what it is! As one of my Twitter pals put it -- it's like Facebook for people with ADHD. Now, I never got into Facebook...or Myspace....or whatever else is out there. But for some reason I'm all a Twitter!

Basically, once you've signed up, you "follow" people and they "follow" you. This is pretty much your friends list. Then you and your friends post a sentence or two as to what you are currently doing. So, for example, my Twitter posts would be something like:

Just gave the kids a bath.

Just gave the dog a bath.

Just served my family a fabulous dinner (haha).

Enjoying a glass of wine before I hit the sack.

You see, it's NOT exciting. And the other people's posts are generally NOT exciting. So what's all the fuss? Why do I want to know what everyone else is doing? Why do they want to know what I'm doing? I mean, it's not like I'm Lindsay Lohan. (Thank goodness.)

Autism Awareness Month

Did you know (as stated by the Autism Society of America) that:

* Every day 60 American families are told they have a child with autism.
* As many as one out of every 150 babies born will have autism.
* Autism is growing at an alarming rate of 10 to 17 percent each and every year in America.
* More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined.
* 1.5 million Americans have some form of autism spectrum disorder.
* Autism receives less than 5% of the public funding contributed each year to fight all major childhood diseases.

Did you also know that the incidence of autism is 4 times more common in boys than in girls? These statistics are overwhelming to me! So, what can we do?

If you have children, the best thing is to watch for early signs. Autism can be treated but early diagnosis and intervention is crucial. Here are some signs to look for:

*Lack of or delay in spoken language
*Repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects)
*Little or no eye contact
*Lack of interest in peer relationships
*Lack of spontaneous or make-believe play
*Persistent fixation on parts of objects

Don't ever hesitate to speak with your pediatrician about Autism (or anything for that matter!). There are also many organizations such as the Autism Society of America, Autism Speaks, and the Autism Research Institute that can give you more information on the disease and how to get involved!

What a Mess!

After breakfast this morning, we got online to do some work and noticed that our website was a complete mess! Seems our site was having some server problems. Eeeeek! We'd like to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and are a little embarrassed that you may have seen the mess for yourselves.

However, don't fret! The site is back up and running again. Yep, things are all cleaned up -- thanks to our WONDERFUL web designer Lindsay at Purr Design. She is the best web designer ever (in our opinion) and knew exactly what to do. Thanks, Lindsay!!! You're the greatest!!!

Rain Rain....Go AWAY!

It's been a typical Midwest March...and I am tired of it!! The first two weeks of the month we were stuck inside because of ice and snow storms. Now the end of the month is non-stop rain. Ugh! Can I tell you how much my kids and I need to GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY!?!?!?! Yes, we are all going stir-crazy.

While the rain is good for my business (I actually stay inside and get work done!), I am longing for sunshine and warmth. And I must admit, these days definitely present a challenge....how to entertain the kids??

So what have we been doing? Here's a short list I compiled:

Daily "Jimmy Buffett" concerts performed by our 3 year old
Making pillow forts
Playing with play clay
Candyland, Candyland, Candyland
"Cooking" using ALL the tupperware in the house

And of course I'd be lying if I didn't say watching T.V.

Inspiration in the Windy City

I'm energized. I'm refreshed. I'm ready to roll!! And I owe it all to this past weekend in Chicago.

After graduating from veterinary school, I took my first job in Chicago...where I lived from 2000 until 2006. You never forget your first job, your first apartment, the first day of your REAL life...and for me, that all happened in Lincoln Park (downtown Chicago.) So, not to get all sappy, but anytime I go back to the Windy City it definitely feels like going back home.

This past Saturday, I attended a women's entrepreneurial seminar organized by Country Living Magazine. Wow. Talk about inspiration! We listened to amazing successful women....such as Anna Griffin....yep...that's right. Anna Griffin -- THE stationary queen!! Did I say she was amazing??

After the seminar, I enjoyed a girl's night out. I was so excited to get time to visit with one of my greatest friends. She also happens to be a veterinarian that I met at my first "real" job --and we've been wonderful friends ever since. Anyway, it was so good to have some girl time! You know, as a wife and mother of two, it just doesn't happen as often as it should. Needless to say, we ended up sharing a bottle of wine and staying up until 4am talking about anything and everything...

Sunday, before I headed back home, I stopped by one of my retailers, "Twinkle Twinkle Little One." I was so fortunate to be able to celebrate the store's grand opening and to see my products in action! If any of you live in Chicago, you have GOT to visit this store....not because they carry Mairzey Dotes products, but because it is an absolutely amazing place. Rachel Glasson, the boutique's owner, has such an amazing eye for detail -- and it shows in her store and product selection. Wow! Where was that place when I was pregnant?? Unfortunately, I forgot my camera..but Rachel promised to send some pictures...so when I get them, I will post for all of you to see. (By the way, her store is located at 3224 North Damen Avenue.)

So, it's late Sunday night...back in Indianapolis. I should be relaxing and off to bed soon, but like I said...I'm energized, the kids are sleeping...and I'm off to work!!
